Pentagon Investigation Concludes Defense Secretary Put Troops in Danger with Messaging App Chat.

A long-awaited Pentagon report has determined that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth violated departmental policies by sharing secret information in a Signal messaging chat, as stated by a source familiar with the report.

Details of the Incident

The online conversation in question included details about a scheduled air attack in Yemen targeting Houthi militants. This chat was revealed after a reporter for the Atlantic was included as a participant.

Other individuals in the chat reportedly included JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and former security advisor Mike Waltz. The report focused solely on the conduct of Hegseth, as the other officials are not employed at the Pentagon.

Signal is a publicly available communication application that was not approved for transmitting sensitive material.

Serious Threat to Troops

The inspector general's report determined that the intelligence circulated by Hegseth was secret and could have endangered the lives of US troops if it had been intercepted by a hostile nation.

Notably, the report acknowledged that Hegseth possessed the authority to downgrade the information he distributed, though it was not specified whether he actually exercised that authority.

Hegseth's Response

The informed individual indicated that Hegseth declined an interview by the investigators. Instead, he provided a brief written statement.

In his response, Hegseth claimed he only disclosed information that would not have endangered personnel or jeopardized the operation. He further stated that he possessed the authority to declassify material and viewed the investigation to be politically motivated.

Future Actions

The completed report has been shared with Congress. An publicly releasable copy is anticipated to be released later this week.
