Tetris Didn't Succeed at This Gaming Ceremony — An Additional Classification Could Fix That

Whenever a significant prize-giving event approaches, you'll find a clamor for the addition fresh award types to recognize overlooked contributions and delight the passions of fans with niche passions.

Another commentator has already made for a horror game category. It would be amazing. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, representing a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist when I prioritize since similar to blinkered fanatics, I have a cast-iron argument supporting my request remains most pressing above others. Here's the proposal: We need a classification for brain-teasing titles.

Categorizing Game Types

Categorizing art by genre is not a science; it’s very subjective, and typically generate discussions and end in fuzzy definitions. It's understandable that cinema institutions steer clear of genre categories. But it is a necessary evil in the world of interactive entertainment, which are so diverse they hardly constitute one unified medium.

For the full spectrum of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to receive proper recognition, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

Leading game ceremonies offer these genre categories for Action-oriented games, Action/Adventure, RPG experiences, Combat games, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these award types effectively encompass a lot of ground, making space possible for most games within them.

Not so for logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears for their placement. Consider three of this year’s best games, each quite distinct: structural challenges from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. Where could they possibly go between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.

The Representation Problem

There are dozens excellent brain-teasers published annually that have no home in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match classification types such as Handheld titles, VR/AR Game, or the extremely competitive small studio competitions.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition completely that year
  • Another creative title received no nominations during that ceremony
  • A beloved organization game received no acknowledgment recently
  • Just some logic titles barely qualified for niche award types

Significance of Puzzle Games

These are often compact experiences, however the design behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Iconic mobile puzzle games rank among most popular titles worldwide continuing this trend for many years.

The famous puzzle experience competes with popular creative games for the title of most purchased experience; it also contends as greatest title ever. Brain-teasers form essential building blocks to the art of video games, and engaging across multiple categories.

Proposal and Rationale

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. It would be easy to populate a field of five with fascinating, diverse, deserving games annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, because you’d have to leave numerous deserving experiences.

Restating the point, these represent titles lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Logic title developers operate at the hard edge interactive creation, producing among essential manifestations of the video game form. Comparable to film action specialists, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay decades.
