Trump's Woke Warning Misses The Continent's True Threat: Technological Decline.

Donald Trump's security policy document offers a flawed view of the European Union. It claims that unrestrained immigration and what it terms "progressive" agendas pose an existential risk to the continent's identity. Yet, this argument rests on a fundamental misreading of the situation. The actual danger confronting the EU is not cultural but technological and economic lag.

A Glaring Economic Gap Between the US and Europe

The data paint a sobering contrast. Between 2008 and 2023, US GDP surged by eighty-seven percent, while a mere thirteen and a half percent growth for the European Union. Over this period, EU GDP per capita fell from 76.5% to just half of the American figure. Strikingly, even Mississippi now has a higher per capita income than several leading European economies like Italy and France.

Currently, roughly half of the world’s 50 largest tech companies are American, while only four are European.

The Technological Shortfall: A Critical Problem

The growing economic gap stems from stronger productivity growth in the US, largely due to breakthroughs and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of global tech leadership is decidedly American. Over the past fifty years, 241 US firms have scaled into companies valued at over ten billion dollars, compared with only fourteen in the European continent.

This disparity raises a vital question: As the competition for future industries like AI, semiconductors, and quantum computing, where does the EU positioned? Most analysts concede it is largely a two-horse race involving the US and China, with European nations entering at a clear disadvantage.

Root Causes of the Continent's Technological Lag

Several key reasons account for this innovation chasm.

  • Venture Capital: The US boasts a much more robust and agile system for financing new ventures. The EU still lacks a genuine capital markets union, which caps the scale of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Complex and divided rules hinder European business. A American entrepreneur can introduce a product under a single regulatory framework to access a market of over 330 million. The European Union, despite a larger population size, is divided among 27 separate systems, creating significant internal barriers.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward entrepreneurial failure differ sharply. In parts of Europe, business failure was once met with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Defense Spending: The United States enjoys a tightly woven academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's long-term lack of spending in defense has weakened its ability in breakthrough innovation.

The Road Ahead: Reasons for Hopefulness

Despite these challenges, one can find causes for hope. Policymakers are increasingly aware of the severe threat and have started to advance serious reform. Notable reports on EU competitiveness and the single market point to the necessity of major reforms.

Given appropriate incentives and regulatory reforms, these assets could support much higher levels of commercial innovation.

The continent retains considerable strengths: high-quality human capital, excellent schools and universities, and premier research institutions. Coupled with a vast domestic consumer base and high savings rates, these elements have the potential to unleash a surge of venture creation.

Importantly, even if Europe does not take the lead in creating next-generation tech, it can still dramatically boost economic output by adopting and adapting innovations from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

The European Union now faces a decisive moment. As the saying goes, economic erosion often happens "slowly, then all at once". So far, Europe's technological decline has been gradual. However, without decisive action to address its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could turn into a sudden and irreversible decline in world influence.
